Sonie

Page history last edited by PBworks 17 years, 7 months ago

A fairly sophisticated flying machine with an unspecified energy source. Sonies are saucer-shaped and can carry maybe half a dozen people uncomfortably. Occupants are protected by a force field. Sonies can fly in low Earth orbit (although Savi doesn't seem to know this). Their characteristics under water weren't tested. Sonies will not function over the Mediterranian Basin.

Harman claims that it is also called an AFV. Although conventionally an AFV is an Armored Fighting Vehicle, the acronym more likely stands for Autonomous Flying Vehicle. The sonie certainly demonstrates that capability.

“What is it?” said Daeman.

“I think it’s a sonie… also called an AFV,” said Harman, his own voice hushed.

“What? ” said Daeman. “What do those words mean?”

“I don’t know,” said Harman. “But people in the lost ages used to fly around in them.”

The French word "sonie" (probably derived from the Latin "sonus" - "sound") means "loudness".
