Hockenberry Storyline

Page history last edited by Anonymous 4 yrs ago
  • The Plains of Ilium (p1) - Hockenberry begins his tale with a prayer to a Muse, much as Homer's Iliad begins with a prayer to a goddess. At the end of Olympos we understand that Hockenberry goes off to write his memoirs, but a careful reading tips this fact in the opening paragraph of Ilium as Hockenberry asks for a song for the "not-so-close-to-human beings out there dreaming under the ice of Europa, dying in the sulfur-ash of Io, and being born in the cold folds of Ganymede" - in other words, the Moravecs. Hockenberry begins his day as he has for the last nine years - waking up at the barracks at the foot of Mount Olympos, taking the escalator up to the summit, picking up his scholic equipment fromr his Muse, and then Quantum Teleporting to Ilium. Today is exciting, because after nine years, today is the day which begins Homer's Iliad.

  • The Plains of Ilium (p9) - The confrontation between Achilles and Agamemnon procedes pretty much according to Book I of the Iliad, except for the fact that Achilles leaves before Nestor begins his speech. While Nestor orates, Hockenberry conceives of an audacious plan - and decides to carry it out.

  • Olympos (p32) - Hockenberry files his daily report to the Muse, who takes him aside for a chariot ride. She takes him to the main temple of Olympos, where no scholic has been before, and gives him two pieces of technology - a QT device which allows him to independently teleport, and the Hades Helmet which renders him invisible to all gods except the goddess who ordered the Muse to give Hockenberry the devices. After a brief visit with the gods, Hockenberry is taken to a private session with his patron - Aphrodite - who explains why Hockenberry has survived longer than any other scholic. She has forseen that Hockenberry is capable of performing a service for her - spying on the other gods, and killing Athena.

  • Ilium and Olympos (p65) - Hockenberry, in his new role as spy, follows Aphrodite to Ilium, where she plans to break the truce between the Trojans and the Acheans. Having morphed into Laodocus, she convinces the archer Pandarus to kill Menelaus. Pandarus shoots an arrow directly at Menelaus, only to have Aphrodite fly across the battlefield to deflect it - no lives lost, but the truce broken. The arrow glances through Menelaus anyway, and the poisoned tip kills him. Widespread fighting breaks out, when everything freezes while Apollo, Ares, Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite take their places on the battlefield, at which point Apollo resumes the normal flow of time.
