Olympos - Global Caliphate

The Caliph (or Caliphate) is the title for an Islamic leader. Some Islamic movements have called for the establishing of a single office who would stand as the global leader of the Muslims, or Global Caliphate. In the world of Olympos such a Caliphate rose and fell.

Although not mentioned in Ilium, in Olympos the Global Caliphate, through its strict intolerance of non-Islamic relegions, serves as the history antagonist in the Ilium backstory. In particular, they instigate the following activities:

• (Date Unspecified) - The Global Caliphate creates the Rubicon plague in an attempt to destroy the Jews. The plague slowly kills 97 percent of the world's population (roughly 11 billion people). Israeli geneticists create a "cure" which saves the Jewish people. The fact that Jews survive the plague instigates rumors that they were responsible for an accidental release of the virus.

• 3000 AD - The proto-voynix are "brought in from the dark" via quantum experimentation (perhaps by the Global Caliphate itself). After replicating 3 million of voynix1.0, the Global Caliphate battles the New European Union in southeast Spain. A limited nuclear battle follows, and the area is still glassy three thousand years later when the events of Ilium take place. Apparently the Global Caliphate won that battle.

• 3200 AD - The Global Caliphate upgrades and reprograms the Voynix, and using time machine technology given them by the French, send the new Voynix forward in time to 4600AD. The Voynix are programmed to kill Jews. Prospero intervenes, and upon arrival the Voynix are disabled. It's not clear why the Caliphate send the Voynix forward in time instead of simply using the Voynix in 3200 AD.

• 3700 AD - The Global Caliphate equips a fusion-powered submarine (The Sword of Allah), with ICBMs tipped with black hole bombs. This is a doomsday device is capable of completely swallowing the Earth.

The Global Caliphate met its end after The Sword of Allah incident. Probably.
